I still don't understand the criteria, and I haven't even been following any of this year's literary awards that closely, but this actually made me say "Whoa!" out loud just now in my half awake state: Doris Lessing wins the Nobel Prize.

I'll have to dig up my copy of The Real Thing for a reread.
