Short Reads For One Sitting
Friday, August 28, 2009 at 11:52AM The coming weekend is one of the few I have free to sit at home and do some good reading and writing. The weather is even cooperating with a solid block of weekend rain to keep me bound indoors. In case you are fortunate enough to be in the same situation, what follows is a list of reads I have enjoyed, some recently and some not-so-recently, reads you could easily enjoy in one sitting, perched on a windowsill, or in the crook of a tree. (The first few links go to Powell's; the rest are links to the actual texts.)
- Madeleine L'Engle - Meet The Austins
Truman Capote - Breakfast At Tiffany's
Alan Bennett - The Uncommon Reader
Bruce Eaton - Big Star's Radio City
Elizabeth Bowen - "The Demon Lover" (any of Bowen's stories, really)
Annie Dillard - from An American Childhood
Wendell Berry - "The Nature Consumers"
John Hughes - "Vacation '58"
11 Things By Josh Allen That Everyone Should Read
The short absurdist prose of Daniil Kharms
